About This Quiz

This trivia is about a classic member of the NHL Western Conference, the Edmonton Oilers, a professional ice hockey team based in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

‘Wild Bill’ Hunter and Dr. Chuck Allard founded the Oilers in 1971. Being one of the twelve founding franchises of the World Hockey Association, the team played its first season in 1972. In the beginning, the team would occupy one of two franchises in Alberta, along with the Calgary Broncos. The Oilers changed its name to Alberta Oilers before the first WHA season when the Broncos moved to Cleveland, Ohio. Following the merger between the NHL and the WHA in 1979, the team was one of the four franchises absorbed in the NHL, retaking its old name.

Once the Edmonton Oilers were in the NHL, they went on to win the Stanley Cup five times, in 1983–841984–851986–871987–88, and 1989–90 seasons. Combined with the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team has won the most championships since the union between the NHL and the WHA. It has also won the most championships among teams entering the league after 1967. Since the expansion, only Montreal Canadiens has won the Stanley Cup more times than the Oilers. During the 1980s, the team achieved dynastic status thanks to its success, earning it a place in the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Since the 2004–05 season, the Oilers have not been in the playoffs, with the exception of 2016–17. The Edmonton Oilers chose 12 first-round picks in the Draft from 2007 to 2011. Ten of these were top ten picks, 6 of these in the top four, and 4 of these were the first overall pick. Edmonton drafted four players with first-choice picks in that year’s NHL Draft. But only the players Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins remained on the team today.

Edmonton Oilers and Calgary Flames are the two NHL franchises based in Alberta. The proximity between the two franchises resulted in a strong rivalry known as the “Battle of Alberta”. Are you one of the Oiler’s head? Would you be there to support the team in the Battle of Alberta? This quiz will test your knowledge about the Edmonton Oilers, get ready, and prove your worth!
