About This Quiz
Based in Pennsylvania, the Pittsburgh Penguins are a professional ice hockey team. Created in 1967, during the NHL expansion, the Penguin’s played for most of their history in the Civic Arena, affectionately called the “The Igloo” by the fans, this trivia will bring you some nostalgic feelings about the glory times of the team. But at the end of 2009, they moved into a new arena, the Consol Energy Center.
Only in 1980 did the white, black, and gold uniforms become official after using blue and white for many years. It was a result of the colors being the same that all other teams in the city had, so the league approved the change.
During 1982-83 and 1983-84, the team suffered from the two worst seasons of its history. Even rumors about bankruptcy and closing the franchise swirled around the team after these seasons. But in 1984 everything changed. In that year’s draft, the young phenomenon that would change the Penguins’ history was selected. Mario Lemieux.
Even though Lemieux’s numbers were impressive, he wouldn’t win the title until the 1990-91 season. A team led by Lemieux, Francis, Jágr, and others managed to win the second championship, along with taking the cup title in the following year.
In 2004, and 2005, by drafting Evgeni Malkin and Sidney Crosby, the Penguins managed to return to the top. Mario Lemieux was Malkin and Crosby’s mentor in his last years being players for the club. Although Lemieux left Crosby the captain’s armband, he refused it because he claimed he was too young. But only a year later, he became captain of the team, with just 19 years old. At the age of 21 in 2009-10, Crosby was the youngest captain to win the Stanley Cup, with the help of promising players like Sergei Gonchar and Evgeni Malkin.
Crosby again led the team to the title in 2016, leading a young team of players who contributed greatly to the title, like Alex Ovechkin, Derick Brassard, and the star Phil Kessel.
Even though Pittsburgh has been involved with hockey for generations and has always had a solid and loyal fan base, the Penguins struggled in the early years with fan support. With a seating capacity of more than 16,000, Civic Arena would average a total of 6,000 fans per game at times. That’s why NHL had no problem with the team being relocated. Pittsburgh’s Penguins team today is an NHL mainstay, especially among American teams outside the Original Six and considered second behind the Steelers among Pittsburgh’s three major professional sports franchises. Did you know all of that? We doubt! Only an extremely passionate fan could know all of this about the Penguins. Take this quiz and prove to us the amazing fan you are!
